Are you attempting to access a database that requires an alternative method of remote access? Important Some of our databases require an access method from ITS and some require a password obtainable from the LRC. This information should be included in the database description box. Carswell Lawsource, Quicklaw, DLR Plus and Safari E-Books - are not available off campus through the library's remote access server. VPN Client offered through Algonquin College's Information Technology department may be a possible access methods from home. While the libary, in the case of your library account and ITS, in the case of the VPN Client, will make every effort to help you with your remote access problems we cannot trouble shoot issues relating to your internet configuration or local ISP. Some databases such as E-STAT, E-CPS and OVID require their own login and password to be accessed off campus. Your campus library will be able to supply you with the login and password upon being presented with your student/faculty/staff number. Browser problems Are you using Explorer or Netscape 5 or higher? Other web browsers may have difficulty accessing the remote access server. Problems have been reported with newer versions of Explorer (7 and above) - try another browser if at all possible. Remote access to the Library databases has been tested with the latest versions of Fire fox and there are no access issues when using this browser. This is a free download and will not conflict with other browsers you have installed on your computer. Safari browser for the Mac is not compliant with our server. If you are using a Mac computer please use Firefox as your browser to access our databases remotely. ______________________________________________________________________ Self trouble-shooting: Try another database from the same company (ie: EBSCO) or a database from a different company (ie: Proquest) to see if either database is experiencing problems. Close all browser windows and try again. Try another browser for example if you are using Explorer try Firefox. Do you have the security on your home computer set to not receive cookies? See below for more information. If you want to contact the LRC main desk (via telephone or e-mail listed below) please record the error message that you are receiving as well as the names of the databases that you have tried so that the staff person can identify your problem and resolve it quicker.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Browser Cookies and Firewalls on your Home Computer. You have received a computer message that denies you database access that tells you to reset your cookies. Remote Access requires that the user’s browser have cookies enabled. In addition, some personal firewalls, such as Norton Personal firewall or Internet security, implement their own security layer and block cookies and privacy information. If you are experiencing connection problems with accessing the login window for Remote Access, cookies may be your problem. Make sure your browser's security setting is set to medium or below. Anything above may not let the cookies across. (Internet Options - Security and Privacy advanced settings) If you are not going through a proxy server, make sure there are no proxy settings defined in your browser. Sometimes if there is more than one person using a household computer, somebody else may have accessed databases using a proxy server from another college/university/public library. To solve this problem, either clear your cache or have each person use a separate copy of a browser. (Internet Options - General)
