How Do I Find a Book on the Shelf?

Use the Catalogue to find your book.

The record will tell you the following:

  • If this item is available for borrowing (available or unavailable)
  • Location (standard shelf location or in library use (reserves or reference) It will also note if the item is in a special area of the library. (easy readers or over sized)
  • Library Location-the campus library that has your item.
  • Items on reserve or in reference at other campuses cannot be inter-campus loaned.
    • For example: Romeo and Juliet.
    • Author Collins, Anne.
    • Call Number PE1126.A4 C6444 2008
    • Publisher Edition
    • Publishing Date 2008
    • Holdings 1 copy available at Algonquin - Woodroffe in Easy Reader.
  • If you click on the title to open the complete record you will see more information about the title.
    • If the title is listed as "unavailable" the due date will be shown.
  • Record the Call Number shown in the catalogue on a slip of paper. This number will be seen on the spine of your book. (the call number for the item above was PE1126.A4 C6444 2008)
  • Remember that this book is in a special library collection which has it's own location within the library - easy reader.

To find your book, follow the Call Number to the location by:

  • PE - Reading the first line in alphabetical order. A, AA, BF, F.
  • 1126 - Then read the second line as a whole number in numeric order. 1, 2, 2.2, 3, 22.
  • A4 - Read the third line alphabetically first. Then read the number as a decimal. C65, C655, C7, D3.
  • C6444 - Read the fourth line alphabetically first. Then read the number as a decimal. C65, C655, C7, D3.
  • 2008 - New editions are shelved chronologically.
