Videos and DVD's in the Classroom

By Mary Anne Reinhard and Chris Boal, Learning Resource Centre

logo teaching with technologyThinking about showing a movie in your class?

Keep in mind that videos and DVDs can be shown in a classroom setting if they have Public Performance Rights (PPR). The Learning Resource Centre has many titles available in a wide variety of subject categories for use in teaching or presentations at Algonquin -- all with Public Performance Rights.

The Public Library may have some titles with PPR and if so the computer record will indicate Public Performance Rights.  Videos and DVDs sold to individuals or available from video stores usually have only home use rights.

Borrowing Audio-Visual Materials

Due to increased demand for these resources, we encourage Faculty to book Audio-Visual (AV) materials only for the time needed for showing -- up to a maximum of two weeks.

Staff wishing to borrow a video should bring their Employee card with them (if employed Full time) or their green library card (if part-time). Please contact the LRC at extension 5834 if you have questions about the cards.

It is recommended that you book videos in advance to avoid disappointment.  These booking may be made two days to two months before the actual show date. At the end of a semester you can book the material that you will need for next semester.

To book AV materials in advance, you can contact Chris Boal by phone, during regular office hours, at extension 5943 or by email at boalc@algonguincollege.com. After 3:30 p.m., please contact the Learning Resource Centre front desk at extension 5834.

All material booked in advance should be picked up in person at the front desk of the Learning Resource Centre (C205) during its hours of operation. (The Learning Resource Centre web site lists the hours of operation for all campuses at: http://www.algonquincollege.com/lrc.) You will need to show your employee/library card.
