Through Student Eyes

student eyes pictureWe wandered the Woodroffe campus and asked students from various programs to respond to the following question:

Where do you do your best studying? If money was no object, what would your ideal study space be like?

Student Responses

If it is just working on a project, then the library or the cafeteria in T building. Working there isn’t a big deal since for that, it doesn’t need to be that quiet. For a test, I can’t study here – it’s too busy.  I go to the Ottawa Public Library or the library at the University of Ottawa, which is much bigger and much stricter about talking.

Construction/Civil Engineering, 3rd Year

I always study in rez, but it has uncomfortable furniture. The priority for me is comfortable furniture – ergonomically. Everything has to be really clean. I usually study where it is quiet.

Massage Therapy, 1st Year

For me, money doesn’t matter. It’s more about studying by myself, or with one other student. Usually, there is music on and it is relaxing – like my own apartment.

Massage Therapy, 1st  Year

I like a tidy area. I like small groups, but not huge groups – otherwise I get distracted. I like a relaxed atmosphere – like being at home.

Massage Therapy, 1st Year

I do my best studying here in the library. I don’t have any textbooks, so I use the ones here. I will come here the day before a test or on breaks. It is the best way for me to get work done. It’s quieter than at home. Even with money, my ideal study space would still be the library – unless I had my own house.

Pre-nursing, 1st Year

Quiet place – like at home. My ideal space would be like a cubicle, a box-like desk  or a super version of that with everything I need to do an entire assignment or project. Everything that I need would be there close to me.

SME  (Small Medium Enterprise ) Business Management, 1st Year

Library. At home, I watch too much tv. I am distracted too easy. We need a bigger library that is quieter.

Operational Management, 3rd Year

I work best in a relatively quiet place where I don’t have a lot of distractions. At home, I have a lot of people coming up to me and talking to me. Here (in the Online Learning Centre), I can put on my music, flip up my work (on my laptop), and start doing my work.

Police Foundations, 2nd Year

In the animation lab. There’s not a lot of people there. The lab is devoted to my program. It has all of the tools that I need in my program – we need a lot of special equipment to do our work. My ideal space would be a secluded room with a light table, a whole pile of paper, and a stack of DVD’s to watch. Nothing gets you more pumped for drawing than watching some cartoons.
