Tips for Being a Self-Directed Learner

The key to being successful in college is to be actively involved in your course. Take control of your learning! Don’t wait until your instructors assign you material. Start right away. The more initiative you take in learning the more you will gain in knowledge and skills.

Algonquin College provides many resources to help students become successful self-directed learners. The habits that you develop now will help you to build life long learning skills that are vital in the work force. Here are some tips to help get you started.

• Take responsibility for your learning
  When you are experiencing difficulty, find help. Your first point of contact is always your teacher.


• Be willing to grow and experience
  Don’t give up at the first sign of difficulty
  Apply knowledge to real life experiences


• Get involved– don’t just sit there!
  Involve yourself in the class and the learning activities
  Ask questions
  Have confidence and question what you read


• Ask for feedback
