Portfolio Presentation

Candidates who have successfully met the academic prerequisites for admission will be invited to submit a portfolio for review to complete the non-academic portion of the admission process.

Your portfolio submission is extremely important. It will be reviewed and evaluated by interior design faculty and allow us to determine your suitability and future potential to succeed and remain in the program. For complete details on what needs to be in your portfolio, click here Portfolio.

Your portfolio can be submitted online as a single PDF. Be sure to include your name, email address, telephone number and student number. Organize your work into a cohesive presentation, labelling each item, as well as including the size of the actual work.

Please refer to the details below for submitting:

Please label your pdf and refer to it as “Interior Design Portfolio” and include your name. Email your electronic portfolio to: design@algonquincollege.com in a single PDF document, and include your name, email address, telephone number and student number. Each piece should be clearly labelled indicating the title and medium used, as well as the size of the actual work.

There is no charge for portfolio evaluation.

The portfolio consists of three parts:

1. 10-15 creative work examples

Choose your best work that features your wide range of skills. Some examples to include may be:

  • Pencil and ink drawings
  • Multimedia presentations
  • Sketches of ongoing work showing your ideas, observations and imagination
  • AutoCAD drawings
  • Hand drafted architectural drawings
  • Artistic Photography
  • Graphic design
  • 3D models

PLEASE NOTE: Each piece should be clearly labelled indicating the title and medium used. Any work that is 3-dimensional should be photographed.

2. Home Test
Part of the portfolio presentation also includes a Home Test and a short essay of 300 to 500 words.

The Home Test is comprised of two components.
Part 1: A sequence or series of separate elements depicting a journey/story told in seven stages. The journey needs to indicate creative thinking regarding the abstract concept of a journey.

Part 2: A hand pencil sketch of an interior public commercial space. The sketch should indicate 3-D visual and technical skills. Due to the situation with Coronavirus (Covid-19), as an alternative to Part 2 you can select an image that fits the criteria and draw from that. You can use photos from a magazine, newspaper or website.

3. Essay

The essay is a required element of your portfolio presentation. It is to be approximately 300 to 500 words that describe your interest and knowledge of interior design as a profession. The essay should indicate an understanding of the difference between interior design and interior decorating.

A detailed description of the requirements for the Home Test and essay can be found on pages 9 and 10 of the Interior Design Information Booklet.

Portfolios can be submitted anytime up until the April 30th deadline. After April 30th, we will review portfolios, if required, until the program is full, however early submission helps secure your spot in the program. (Please note that applicants must apply via www.ontariocolleges.ca to the program). After the portfolio has been reviewed, it will be returned or available for pick-up during the following week.

Applicants who are not accepted because of their portfolio will receive comments on how to improve their presentation and work, and will be permitted to resubmit a second time.
