Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a profession-based or artistic program?
Professional Writing involves both organizational writing and creative writing. The emphasis in all courses is on attention to detail and creative and critical thinking in all writing activities, from communications to creative fiction. The program of study is geared towards ensuring students have the flexibility and skills to work as a writer in a variety of fields.

Will I need my own laptop?
As this is a mandatory laptop program, you will be required to own a laptop computer; either a Mac or PC is acceptable, provided it meets minimum hardware and program software specifications. The laptop needs enough capacity to run Microsoft Office and the latest version of Adobe Creative Suite. Students may purchase a new laptop from a vendor of their choice but we recommend you check the Algonquin College’s New Technology store that offers laptops at very competitive prices.

What software will be provided?
The college is licensed to provide latest versions of Microsoft Office, which includes Word and PowerPoint, and Adobe Creative Suite, which includes Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat.

How much will I spend on supplies?
Our students can expect to spend approximately $800 the first year and $500 the second year on books and supplies.

Will I need to purchase course books?
Yes, however, we recommend you wait until you meet your instructors during the first week of classes. Some books will be required and others recommended. Used books may be purchased from former students, the campus bookstore or on-lined is counted sources. The internet is also a great resource of information when needed. Many courses in the program of study are unique. Instructors often build course packs or provide learning resources.

What if I need to have a job while at school – how many hours can I work?
Most students need to work to supplement their savings, family contributions, and/or student loans. If you work more than 15 hours/week, you may find it difficult to keep up with the program’s workload. Second year students can apply to be tutors. Their language-based skills make them highly sought after.

How many hours will I spend on course-related work?
Average classroom/lab hours (with instructors) are 21 hours per week. However, most of our students spend 40 to 50 hours per week on course work. Many do some work during evenings and weekends.
