Game Development

Game designers and developers wanted!

Algonquin College, through the School of Media and Design, are offering an innovative program in Game Development. Industry and applicant demand led to the development of the program. The program is unique in that it concentrates on both programming and design. Since the majority of employment opportunities available are within programming, there is about a 70 per cent focus on learning object-oriented programming (OOP) languages like C++, Java, OpenGL, DirectX, Action Script and Lingo. "This program is unique in that it will teach both programming and digital animation to the students," says Tanya Hawley, co-ordinator and creator of the three-year program. "Students will combine experience in programming gaming applications with animation software such as Maya and 3D Studio Max."

Massive industry demand in regions of Canada, the United States and throughout the world led to the creation of the program. It is the first program in Canada concentrating on game design and development recognized by the Ministry of Education in the province of Ontario. "There are about 25 different career paths for game developers," she says. "Game designers, developers, programmers, and engineers are the main employment opportunities. But jobs like graphic designer or software developer are other options. Animator; sound designer, game tester, level and character designer or video creators are other possibilities."

The demand for game developers comes from a variety of industries including entertainment, education, government, and consumer products. Students will train to create games of strategy, skill, education, and entertainment. The program is almost entirely project-based - meaning students create games and their components during their three years of study, rather than write tests, exams or essays.

Students seeking to enroll in the program need to have an understanding of both programming and either animation or design. People who enjoy art and math are the ideal student of this program. Contact davidst@algonquincollege.com  for more information.
