Our Horticulture program provides professional training in the areas of greenhouse production of ornamental plants, plant propagation, disease and pest control, soils and fertilizers. As well as learning landscaping design, construction and professional garden maintenance, the basic foundation is in learning ornament plants including native plants that can be found in our outdoor living laboratory of gardens and greenhouses surrounding our school. During the academic year, our students learn by practicing applied horticulture outdoors in the various gardens and nursery areas as well as inside under the modern glass roof greenhouse and specialized labs.
"Our programs attract people who have a flair for design and artistic talent," says Brian Henderson, a Horticulture professor. "The course has state of the art facilities that provide an excellent place for training." Environmental issues are also a concern of the horticulture program. Issues include waste management, composting, reducing yard waste, integrated pest management and proper pesticide use.
"Immediate job skills are acquired each day through practical, hands-on work with trees, shrubs, landscaping, floral and special arrangements, flower gardening, houseplants, lawns, soils and fertilizers," says professor David Goodfellow. "The tangible results of professional training from our regional, national and international instructors are evident from courses which combine technical expertise, theory and practical, hands-on training with modern classrooms and equipment."
