Project Hero

Algonquin College is among several Canadian colleges and universities who have signed on to Project Hero. This initiative provides free tuition to the children of Canadian soldiers who are killed in active service.

Algonquin College became the first Ontario College to Implement Project Hero in October 2009. A first-year Business student at the Pembroke Campus received free tuition when her father was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2006. Read the Canadian Forces news release.
Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley, represented by Campus Dean Karen Davies (right), awarded free tuition to first year Business student Jocelyn Ranger (centre) through the Project Hero program, an initiative that offers free tuition to children of fallen soldiers. CFB/ASU Petawawa Commander LCol Keith Rudderham (left) attended the presentation last Monday to offer his congratulations to Ranger, who is the daughter of 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (1 RCR) Regimental Sergeant Major CWO Robert Girouard, who was killed in action in November, 2006. Project Hero was launched earlier this year by Kevin Reed, Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel of the military’s 31 Canadian Brigade Group service units, who teamed up with retired general and recent chief of defence staff Rick Hillier, now chancellor of Memorial University.
To be eligible to receive up to eight semesters of paid tuition, applicants must be:

  • enrolled in a full-time program at any one of Algonquin College’s three campuses
