Algonquin College’s Nursing program was in the news Sunday when the Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun published a story about an important empathy-building exercise students in the program participate in.

The exercise that reporter Joanne Laucius wrote about involves the students listening to a recording of various voices while they’re trying to carry out various tasks in order to help them understand what life is like for people who hear voices.

Nursing professor Carmen Hust told Laucius that the recordings were created by U.S. psychologist Pat Deegan, who herself is a voice-hearer who was diagnosed with schizophrenia when she was 17.

“There are a lot of people struggling who learn coping strategies. It’s how you look at the experience,” she told Laucius.

In addition to interviewing Hust, Laucius spoke to Nursing students Taissa Sekret and Brandy Johnson, as well as instructors Michelle Morley and Matt Le Blanc.
