Algonquin College and The Ottawa Hospital form new partnership

OTTAWA — Algonquin College and The Ottawa Hospital are embarking on a unique partnership in health research, innovation and training. The College has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hospital’s research institute to “encourage and facilitate the development of mutually beneficial linkages” in areas such as digital health, clinical trials and biotherapeutics manufacturing.

“I am very proud to put Algonquin College’s name to this worthy partnership with The Ottawa Hospital’s research institute,” says Cheryl Jensen, President of Algonquin College. “Every day Algonquin is building on its reputation in this region as a centre of excellence in applied research. Through this initiative, we are looking forward to exploring areas of collaboration, particularly as related to initiatives in digital health.”

“I am delighted to formally partner with Algonquin College,” says Dr. Duncan Stewart, Executive Vice-President of Research at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa. “By combining the strengths of both institutions, I believe we’ll be able to create truly unique research and training opportunities in growing areas of health innovation. This will complement our important partnership with the University of Ottawa.”

The agreement, which was signed by Jensen and Stewart, takes effect immediately and will remain in place for five years before it must be renewed.

Algonquin College trains approximately 60 per cent of the region’s frontline healthcare workers, from nurses to sonographers to radiation technologists. It is also home to a new Digital Health program that allows students to study communication for digital health, digital health information technology and health data standards.

The Ottawa Hospital is one of Canada’s largest learning and research hospitals. Its research institute includes more than 1,800 researchers and has an annual budget of more than $100 million. It boasts specialty centres in clinical trials and biotherapeutics that have the potential to transform care for people in Eastern Ontario and change practice around the world. It also has a growing team of researchers dedicated to digital and mobile health.
