Indigenous Youth Visit Algonquin College for Indspire Soaring Conference

OTTAWA — Hundreds of Indigenous high school students from across the country visited Algonquin College today as part of the Indspire 2017 Soaring Conference.

Students participated in hands-on workshops in different college labs, received a campus tour and lunch, learned about the college’s plans for the Institute for Indigenous Entrepreneurship, and attended a music show on campus as part of the two-day conference designed to help prepare the youth for education and employment options after high school. The day began with remarks from College President Cheryl Jensen, and Ron McLester, Executive Director & Special Advisor to the President, Indigenous Initiatives.

“As the host college, we are excited to partner with Indspire to profile the accomplishments of these Indigenous learners from across Canada,” said McLester. “I would like to extend to them the warmest welcome and wish them only the best in future endeavours.”

Later this evening, the students will participate in the Indspire Awards at the National Arts Centre. Indspire is an Indigenous-led registered charity that invests in the education of Indigenous people for the long-term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada.

In the past term, Algonquin College was home to a diverse group of 1,182 self-identified Indigenous students — a number that is growing at about 12 per cent per year.
