In support of the College’s commitment to provide an opportunity for all employees to develop and grow their leadership capabilities, the Algonquin Leadership in Education Institute focuses on the knowledge and skills related to leadership in higher education and provides opportunities for their application. Face-to-face sessions engage employees from Departments and Schools across the College to share best practices and challenges in a collaborative milieu.

The Algonquin Leadership in Education Institute (ALEI) consists of three separate programs: The Leader in Me (ALEI 1), Leading with Others (ALEI 2) and Organizational Leadership (ALEI 3).

ALEI 1 – The Leader in Me

In this interactive professional development program, participants practice and apply the skills needed in order to achieve team effectiveness and success. The program is designed to encourage on-going application and reinforcement of learning and techniques between sessions.

Note

If you have completed ALEI 1 prior to March 2018, please note that the content has been updated and refreshed and is no longer aligned with the proceeding programs, ALEI 2 & ALEI 3.  It is therefore required that you repeat ALEI 1 in its current version.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Leading others, formally or informally, means being grounded in one’s own values, preferences, ways of working and communicating with others. In this interactive leadership development program participants practice and apply the skills needed in order to identify personal and interpersonal strengths in the context of leadership, identify elements of communication, motivation, identify strategies to improve resilience skills and begin to articulate a personal leadership philosophy and style. The program is designed to encourage ongoing application and reinforcement of learning and techniques between sessions and following completion of the program.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Any employee in a leadership situation either by virtue of position or any employee in an informal role who aspires to develop their leadership strengths and capabilities and who is committed to making a measurable impact at the College.

The program consists of 7 modules and 7 in-person peer learning sessions.

Fall 2023

Module 1: Thursday September 21, 2023, 2-4 pm
Module 2: Thursday October 5, 2-4 pm
Module 3: Friday October 20, 1:30-4:30 pm
Module 4: Thursday November 2, 2-3:30 pm

FORMAT

ALEI 1, The Leader in Me, is offered in a hybrid format of asynchronous (self-paced, online) and synchronous (multimodal, in-person) learning. The online learning is self-paced and self-directed and includes interactive and collaborative learning opportunities. Participants should plan to commit 3-4 hours per module to complete this work.  The online experience is complemented by 90-120 minute synchronous, multimodal, in-person learning sessions (attendance either in the classroom or virtually) during which participants will be given the opportunity to share and discuss their learning together.

PREREQUISITES

None

PROGRAM OF STUDY

This is a modularized program that is offered over a period of several weeks.  In both the online and in-person environments, participants work independently, in the large group and in collaborative learning structures. Participants are provided with a variety of resources that can be used for further review or investigation.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Upon completion of ALEI 1, participants will have had the opportunity to acquire and apply the following:

  • Explore various leadership theories, principles and styles,
  • Identify personal and interpersonal strengths in the context of leadership,
  • Identify strategies to further build and maintain strong interpersonal relationships,
  • Identify the elements of interpersonal communication,
  • Explore motivation theory as it relates to personal leadership style,
  • Identify strategies to strengthen resilience and improve time management skills,
  • Identify a personal leadership philosophy and style.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM

  • Completion of all asynchronous, online learning activities prior to the in-person peer learning sessions (approximately 3-4 hours),
  • Full attendance at and participation in the 7 synchronous, multimodal, in-person peer learning sessions (1.5-3 hours per session),
  • Completion of a self-reflection personal/professional growth journal and a personal leadership philosophy.

A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION WILL BE PROVIDED TO ALL PARTICIPANTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE PROGRAM.

EXEMPTIONS AND PRIOR LEARNING RECOGNITION AND ASSESSMENT (PLAR)

Exemptions may be granted based on proof of successful completion of at least one of the following programs:

  • Management Skills Program OR Fundamentals of Leadership 1 & 2 (AC Corporate Training Centre)
  • CiCan Leadership Institutes programs

A Prior Learning Recognition and Assessment (PLAR) process is available to applicants.

ALEI 2 – Leading with Others

Participants in this advanced leadership development program will integrate contemporary management concepts, skills, and tools needed for successful leadership within Algonquin College. It will provide participants with access to expert internal resources in the areas of labour relations, budgeting, and relevant performance metrics.

Please indicate your interest in participating in this program to your immediate Manager/Chair. Pre-requisite: successful completion of the ALEI 1: Leader in Me program or comparable leadership program offered through Algonquin College.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Leading others means understanding, appreciating and leveraging your own strengths as well as the strengths and diverse gifts of others.  It means understanding the culture of a team, a department or an organization in order to be a successful leader, either formally or informally.  In this leadership development program, participants explore characteristics of effective teams, articulate the process of change, explain team building concepts and describe and leverage diversity within a respectful workplace.  This program is designed to encourage ongoing application and re-enforcement of learning and techniques between sessions, as a requirement of completion of the program and following completion of the program.

Any employee in a leadership situation either by virtue of position or any employee in an informal role who aspires to develop their leadership strengths and capabilities and who is committed to making a measurable impact at the College.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

  • Apply personal leadership styles and strengths to an understanding of team leadership,
  • Explain the theories and concepts associated with the team concept,
  • Explore the characteristics of effective teams,
  • Articulate the process of change including the role of resistance and resilience,
  • Explain the importance of building relationships within the team,
  • Build a common understanding of the impact of culture on team dynamics,
  • Enhance personal exploration of leadership and teams,
  • Identify a personal philosophy of leading with others.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM

  • Completion of all asynchronous, online learning requirements and full participation in online learning activities prior to the in-person peer learning sessions (approximately 3-4 hours),
  • Full attendance at and participation in the 7 synchronous, multimodal, in-person peer learning sessions (1.5-3 hours per session),
  • Completion of a self-reflection personal/professional growth journal and a personal team leadership philosophy.

A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION WILL BE PROVIDED TO ALL PARTICIPANTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE PROGRAM.

ALEI 3 – Organizational Leadership

In this interactive professional development program, participants explore, practice and apply skills needed to develop and broaden leadership ability, style, and capacity for change in an academic environment. Through theory, the use of real-world case studies, group discussions, interactive presentations, and reflective practice, participants develop an appreciation of the impact of vision, values and diversity on an academic organizational culture. This program provides participants with opportunities to expand leadership capacity, become effective agents of organizational change, and help position the College for future success.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In this interactive employee learning program, participants explore, practice, and apply skills to develop and broaden leadership ability, style, and capacity for change in a post secondary environment. Through theory, the use of case studies, group discussions, interactive activities, and reflective practice, participants develop an appreciation of the impact of vision, values and diversity on post secondary organizational culture. This program provides the participants with opportunities to expand on leadership capacities, become effective agents of organizational change, and help position the College for future success.

  • Successful completion of ALEI 2: Leading with Others (formerly Advanced Leadership Development Program).

PROGRAM OF STUDY

This is a modularized program that is offered throughout the academic year. In both the online and in-person environments, participants work independently, in the large group, and in collaborative learning structures. Participants are provided with resources that not only will be used in the program, but can also be used in professional and personal life following the program.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Upon completion of ALEI 3, participants will have had the opportunity to acquire and apply the following:

  • Articulate a personal leadership framework that facilitates meaningful change at both the personal and organizational level;
  • Apply the concepts of agile leadership to the realities of post-secondary education;
  • Articulate one’s own capacity for change in an academic environment;
  • Describe and develop resilience in response to adversity;
  • Identify the conditions required to lead an effective, high-performance team that delivers on institutional goals;
  • Describe and apply strategic execution principles to a rapidly changing post-secondary environment;
  • Explain and interpret the impact of vision, values, and diversity on organizational culture and capacity to achieve success;
  • Investigate and apply program outcomes to a self-identified personal leadership goal/aspiration;
  • Develop self-reflective practice.

RESOURCES

Participants will be provided with online learning resources in the form of readings, videos, and podcasts. A choice of textbooks will be made available upon request. 

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM

  • Completion of all asynchronous, online learning requirements (approximately 4-6 hours per module)
  • Full attendance at and participation in the 10 synchronous, multimodal, in-person peer learning sessions (2-4 hours per session)
  • Articulate a personal leadership portfolio in light of the learning outcomes for the ALEI 3 program.  Participants will share their reflections with their ALEI 3 cohort.

A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION WILL BE PROVIDED TO ALL PARTICIPANTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE PROGRAM.
