Take Advantage of our Co-op Programs and learn why it pays to study in a co-op program!

two cst studentsMost of our co-op programs feature 45 weeks of in-class learning, plus a summer co-op experience. It means your journey to earn your diploma is about 60 weeks long, much shorter than it normally takes to earn a 2-year college diploma. We've set up our co-op programs so that our students graduate before the spring rush of new graduates, meaning they have a leg up on getting started with their job search. In our Radiation Safety program, students who qualify for co-op, complete their work place experience following their 8 month program of study.

The following programs offer co-op to students and employers. You can learn more about these programs by clicking on their titles:

Business

Computer Systems Technician

Environmental Technician Program - New for 2012

Motive Power Technician - Apprenticeship Co-op Program

Outdoor Adventure Naturalist

Co-op Pays Off for Algonquin Students
Co-op is one of the most valuable assets of a college education. Students earn while they learn and make contacts within their field that often position them for employment upon graduation.

Several successful co-op stories include student placements from various programs.

Several students in the Computer Systems Technician Co-op Diploma Program secured full-time employment with Canada Revenue Agency as a result of their co-op experience within the federal government.

Several Business students who did co-op placements at the Royal Bank and Scotiabank have also secured positions after completing their placements. Also, graduates of the Motive Power Apprenticeship Program also received offers of full-time employment as a result of their co-op placement.

Student Application for Co-op

Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley values workplace experiences for our students. We have six programs at our Pembroke Campus that offer students the opportunity to work within their field to gain invaluable experience while also earning a pay cheque.  They include the Computer Systems Technician, Business, Environmental Technician, Radiation Safety, Motive Power Technician Apprentice, and Outdoor Adventure Naturalist programs.

Here are some key features of our co-op programs:

  • tire changingTo be eligible for co-op, students must maintain a high academic standing in their first term of studies.  Co-op is optional with the exception of the Motive Power Technician
    Co-op Apprenticeship Diploma
which has a mandatory co-op experience for students.

  • Students must apply for a co-op experience and while the college makes every effort to help the student secure a placement, it is not guaranteed. Co-op is a partnership between the student, the College and the employer and all parties must do their part to make it a successful program

  • Co-op placements are usually for a minimum of 14 weeks

  • Co-op placements in all 6 programs take place during the summer months
  • The availability of co-op placements may be impacted by economic and labour market conditions
