Algonquin College’s Waterfront Campus, in partnership with Rideauwood Addiction and Family Services, is offering professional training for health and social agency employees. Training Outline

Addiction, the very word elicits strong emotions like fear and anger. The facilitators in this workshop will peel back the layers of this complex disorder and bring insight to the way forward in promoting health and healing for the individuals affected by addiction (addicted person, their family, friends, and community). This one-day Addiction education training is approved by The Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF) for 5.4 education credits (CCEU).


Training Description

Participants will gain deeper knowledge on the issues of substance abuse, dependence and the factors at the root of the issue. The local and provincial treatment modalities will be explored with a focus and integration on harm reduction techniques and building a sober lifestyle. These models will be conceptualized on how to best meet the needs of the affected individuals.

Participants will be given the opportunity to integrate knowledge through experiential small group work, case studies and role-playing. Unpacking Addiction will provide Participants with greater understanding and appreciation for the process of recovery for the entire community.


Core knowledge and content Area(s)

  • Overview of the continuum from substance abuse to dependence will be examined including the latest research on the impact on the brain and the neurobiological development.
  • Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of addiction
  • Understand the potential psychological, social and health impacts of addiction upon the individual.
  • Comprehensive understanding of harm reduction as the best practices model of intervention as well as practical harm reduction strategies
  • Continuum of care offered by the recovery process.
  • Framework to understand the risks and strategies to address the use of Fentanyl and other opiates.
