Bursary for 1st Year Students

All first-year students who register in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program at Algonquin College's Pembroke Campus September 2008, will automatically receive a bursary (amount to be determined) upon registration into the program in Pembroke.

receiving bursaryThis special admissions bursary was provided through a fund generously created by health care organizations throughout Renfrew County.

Nurses are in demand and this bursary program demonstrates how local health care organizations support the training of future nursing graduates to help them meet their labour force challenges.

Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley has been training nurses at its Pembroke Campus for more than 30 years.

In 2004, the college collaborated with the University of Ottawa to offer a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program. All four years of the program are delivered at the Pembroke Campus, where classes are small, and the learning experience is exceptional.   The new lab is modelled to simulate a hospital environment and patient/nurse scenarios.

Students are also eligible for additional admissions bursaries and scholarships through the University of Ottawa.

2007 FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS WELCOMED

Pierre NoelPEMBROKE - Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley welcomed a new group of first year students into its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in the fall of 2007. The degree program is offered in collaboration with the University of Ottawa with all four years being taught at the Pembroke Campus of Algonquin College.

The majority of nurses now working in Renfrew County have been locally trained at Algonquin College and area health care agencies recognized the importance of continuing to have well-trained nurses for future staffing needs.   To support Algonquin College’s B.Sc.N. program, now going into its fifth year in the fall of 2008, several agencies generously contributed to a special bursary fund to encourage students to study at Algonquin College in Pembroke.

Each fall there is a special Program Orientation luncheon and in September 2007, 33 new B.Sc.N. students were each presented with a bursary and offered words of encouragement in their studies by students and health care representatives.  Pierre Noel, CEO of the Pembroke Regional Hospital congratulated the students for choosing the nursing profession and encouraged them to work hard and learn all they can about their profession. The Pembroke Regional Hospital has been a staunch supporter of the BScN Program and, over the past four years, has made significant financial contributions towards student bursaries.

Community agencies who contributed to the bursary fund include Pembroke Regional Hospital; Bonnechere Manor; Miramichi Lodge; the Community Care Access Centre; Renfrew Victoria Hospital; St. Francis Memorial Hospital; Marianhill; Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital; Deep River & District Hospital; Renfrew County and District Health Unit; and the County of Renfrew.

Cutting the cake are students from all four years of the BScN Program in Pembroke.  From the left is Ashley Withers, Year 1; Josh Brazeau, Year 2; Devaloise Hatchou, Year 3; and Melissa Wilkinson, Year 4.
