Services for Current Students

Counselling Services provides caring, confidential, professional counselling for Algonquin students* at no cost.

Our team of helpful professionals is available to provide you with expert support for issues commonly experienced by college students, such as:

  • Academic planning
  • Study skills and time management
  • Career development and program choice
  • Overwhelming stress
  • Troubling relationships
  • Symptoms of depression or anxiety
  • Trauma or grief
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Self-esteem and assertiveness
  • Addictive behaviours
  • Transition and change (homesickness, loneliness, etc.)
  • Sexuality and gender
  • Cultural transition or adjustment
  • Settlement counselling for new Canadians

Counselling Services is committed to supporting the students of Algonquin College, however there are some supports that we help you connect with in the community, including:

  • 24/7 support for students experiencing a mental health crisis (click here for a list of Crisis Support Resources)
  • Psychological or psychiatric assessment (only a qualified doctor can “diagnose” a mental health disorder)
  • Treatment for severe and persistent mental illness
  • Treatment for drug or alcohol abuse
  • Treatment for an eating disorder
  • Long-term psychotherapy

Although we cannot provide these services for students, we can and will connect students with the necessary services. If you are unsure who to ask for help, make an appointment to speak with a counsellor about your options.

If you are in need of immediate support, the following services are available to all students 24/7. They include the following:

  • Good2Talk at 1-866-925-5454.
  • Connex Ontario: drugs/alcohol (1-800-565-8603), mental health (1-866-531-2600), and problem gambling (1-888-230-3505).
  • Ottawa Crisis Line: 613-722-6914 (1-866-996-0991 outside Ottawa)
  • Lanark County Mental Health: This local service operates weekdays. More information can be found at www.lanarkmentalhealth.com. 613-283-2170.

If it is an emergency, please call 911 or go to your closest hospital emergency room.

*Students must be enrolled at Algonquin College in a minimum of a single course consisting of at least 24 hours of instruction hours to be eligible to utilize Counselling Services.
