How long is the program?
This is a two-year diploma program starting in September. Students entering the program build a business foundation and specialized knowledge relevant to the agriculture industry. As they advance through the semesters, courses are designed to maximize real world, hands-on and experiential learning. The optional paid co-op term is open to qualified students and takes place in the summer term following the first year.
What would I learn in this program?
The curriculum is designed to provide strong business knowledge applied to the agriculture industry. Agronomy, farm safety, biosecurity, animal health, nutrition, asset management, legislation, pest control, technology, sustainability are discussed in the context of large crops, livestock, dairy and market garden operations. Students explore the relationship between agriculture and business concepts in finance, accounting, human resources, economic issues, project management, business planning and leadership.
Will I be able to explore advanced topics related to my favourite commodity?
The program is designed to cover basic concepts related to most commodities. However, students are provided the opportunity and the flexibility to explore advanced topics in their choice of commodity for each course. Capstone courses further enhance the capability to personalize the student learning experience, by creating a 5-year Business Plan for a business in a favourite sector or in researching a chosen topic for the Directed Study course.
Who teaches this program?
The program was designed with significant input from producers and agribusiness experts concerned with graduating students who are ready to deliver services to the agricultural community or to operate a farm operation. Producers and industry experts also teach in this program.
Is this program only for students who wish to operate or work on a farm?
Although it’s a path that graduates may follow, there are numerous career opportunities for graduates with a business foundation and a fundamental understanding of the agriculture industry.
What are my options to advance my education after this diploma?
Graduates from this program may seek full-time employment in the industry, or:
- Do a block transfer into another business diploma or into our Business Administration Advanced Diploma
- Pursue several Graduate Certificate opportunities
- Pursue a university degree with advanced standings through several articulation agreements
Does this program have a co-op option?
Yes. This program offers one co-op work term option. Qualified students have the opportunity to apply for and earn a paid co-op work term to gain valuable work experience and networks within the industry.
