Applied Research Perth Campus

What Is Applied Research?

RLL-3Applied research is focused on applying the latest knowledge and technologies in the creation of useful products, services and processes. It often involves prototype development, feasibility studies, clinical trials, as well as technical consultation and market research for business, industry and community partners. Applied research is both different and complementary to basic research, which is primarily focused on the discovery of new academic knowledge through the investigation and proof of new theories and principles.

In a nutshell, it is an opportunity to engage with local business clients to answer a research question. It is also a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in their fields of expertise, to help clients to prosper and to grow, while developing skills they will take with them once they graduate.

So, what’s happening?…

Residential Living Lab (RLL)

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAOur most significant applied research project at the campus is our Residential Living Lab.  For more information on this exciting project take a look at the following link.

LEICA M80 StereoMicroscopes

Open_HouseApplied Research and Innovation has secured two LEICA M80 stereo-microscopes for the purpose of research projects. These microscopes have a large field of view, increased depth of focus and incredible resolution to replicate measurements, photography or inspections of samples of wood, hairs and fibers, plant and organ tissues, hand-writing and currency inspection and many other applications. National Scie4nce Engineering and Research Council (NSERC) granting provided the funding to engage students, faculty and local clients in research projects that are enhanced with the use of these microscopes. If you have an interest in doing research which utilizes these microscopes please contact Kerry Milford, the Project Manager at Perth Campus, 613-267-2859; 5660 or
