Training

Occupational Health & Safety offers a variety of training sessions for employees of the College. These sessions are generally available based on occupational exposures to identified hazards. Managers are responsible to ensure their employees receive necessary training for their work environment. These sessions are not intended for general interest, although with a manager's approval and space availability in a session arrangements can be made for additional attendees.

  • Asbestos Management

Description: Asbestos is a serious health concern for workers and employers today. It can cause Asbestosis, cancers of the lungs, and Mesothelioma. However, Asbestos is relatively safe, when workers are properly educated on how to work safely with asbestos.

Availability & Target Group: Available as scheduled for any employees required to work in areas where possible exposure to asbestos exists or working knowledge is required.

Duration: 2 hour or 4 hour sessions

  • Confined Space Entry

Description: This course is designed to meet the training requirements for personnel who may be required to enter confined spaces.  This course combines the fundamentals confined space awareness, with basic hands-on training. 

Availability & Target Group:  Available as scheduled for any employees required to work in confined space areas.

  • Chemical Handling

Description: This course provides participants with a review of WHMIS and detailed chemical characteristics and precautions. Participants learn emergency fire procedures and spill control principles associated with various types of chemicals.  

Availability & Target Group: As scheduled for any staff working with bulk chemicals or hazardous materials.

  • CPR/First Aid

Description: St. John's Ambulance First Aid and Adult CPR 

Availability & Target Group: Offered free of charge to College employees several times each year

  • Due Diligence 

Description: This course is intended to provide a description of the internal responsibility system for health & safety along with the regulatory and policy environment that assigns employer and personal liability for health & safety. In addition, specific direction is provided to create an awareness of the duties, measures and procedures required to establish due diligence.  

Availability & Target Group: Available as scheduled for administrative staff.

  • Fall Arrest

Description: Over the past 20 years falls have accounted for the largest amount of serious injuries and workplace deaths.  Most of these incidents were due to lack of fall protection equipment and improper use of fall protection equipment. This training establishes an awareness of fall protection measures and details requirements for fall arrest and fall restraint systems.

Availability & Target Group:  Available as scheduled for any employees.

  • Hearing Protection

Description: Workplace noise can pose a hazard and requires certain controls be applied to maintain noise levels below regulated levels. Long term exposure to excessive noise can result in permanent hearing loss. This training will help identify noise hazards in the workplace and appropriate engineering and personal protective equipment to control these hazards.

Availability & Target Group:  Available as scheduled for any employees required to work in environments which expose them to noise hazards.

  • Workstation Ergonomics

Description: The word ergonomics is comprised from two Greek words; “ergos” (work) and “nomos” (natural laws). It can be defined as the science of matching work or tasks to the body. Often injuries can result as a function of force, repetition and posture in a typical office environment. This course reviews proper positioning and workstation adjustments to chairs, monitors, keyboards and other office tools to help prevent repetitive strain injuries.

  • Lockout/Tagout

Description: Lock-out is a term which refers to the process by which any machinery or equipment is made inoperative before inspection, repair or adjustments are undertaken.  Failure to lock-out equipment adequately could result in severe injuries.  This training program focuses on establishing and implementing procedures for affixing the appropriate lockout/tagout devices to energy isolating devices, and to otherwise disable machines, equipment, or processes to prevent unexpected energizing, start-up, or the release of stored energy.

Availability & Target Group:  Available as scheduled for employees required to work on energized equipment

  • Management of Aggressive Behaviour

Description: This course combines information from non-violent crisis intervention techniques, conflict management and aggressive behaviour management references to provide an understanding of the dynamics of aggressive behaviour in the workplace and basic personal safety measures that workers should be familiar with.

Availability & Target Group: Available as scheduled for any staff potentially exposed to aggressive behaviour.

  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Description: This program is intended to provide employees who utilize PPE or have the potential to encounter hazards to the eyes, face, head, feet, hands, with the necessary information to identify hazardous work situations that require the use of PPE, the proper selection and use of PPE, and documentation of this information. Relevant regulatory and policy requirements are also reviewed.

Availability & Target Group:  Available as scheduled for any staff exposed to workplace hazards requiring the use of PPE.

  • RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) *For Women Only

Description: This is an intensive hands-on self defence course designed for women to defend against physical attacks. Self-defence strategies and specific techniques are demonstrated and practiced in simulation-style training.

Availability and Target Group:  Available as scheduled to any female staff or students.

Duration: 12 Hours over two sessions

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention

Description: This course outlines the crisis development cycle and appropriate interventions for verbal and physical acting out behaviours. Participants are provided with an opportunity to practice demonstrated techniques of self-defence and methods of intervention designed with the safety and welfare of both the staff member and the client in mind.

Availability & Target Group: Any staff required to work closely with clients where exposure to verbal and physical acting out behaviour is a risk.

  • Counterfeit Currency

Description: This course describes the problem of counterfeit currency, currency security features and provides participants with the knowledge to recognize and report counterfeit appropriately. The course is presented by the Bank of Canada.

Availability and Target Group:  Available as scheduled for any staff working directly with the public in retail or other cash handling operations.

  • Fire Safety & Emergency Procedures

Description: This program provides a general fire safety and awareness component to the participants and an overview of the College approach to emergency and disaster response. Physical emergency systems that are in place at the College are detailed to create an awareness for all participants regarding access to emergency assistance.

  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods

Description: This one-day course will meet the needs of individuals who are responsible for the handling, offering for transport or transporting of dangerous goods as drivers, shipping/receiving dock personnel or warehousing employees. This program meets or exceeds the requirements of Transport Canada's TP 9554, guidelines A through D in complying with the intent of section 6.2 of the new Clear Language Regulations.

Availability & Target Group:  Available as scheduled to all staff listed above.

  • WHMIS Refresher

Description: WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) training is a regulated requirement for all workplaces which handle any form of hazardous materials. OHS coordinates basic WHMIS training in conjunction with College orientation activities for new employees. This short refresher course is intended to review hazard classes, labeling and material safety data sheets, which in turn enables workers to access information regarding any hazardous material in the workplace.

Availability & Target Group: Regularly scheduled sessions available to all staff working with hazardous products.

Duration: 45 mins.

  • Workplace Violence

Description: It is important to recognize that no workplace is immune from the risk of workplace violence.  The effect that such incidents can have on the personal safety and emotional well being of staff and students is significant.  This workshop is designed to provide participants with an understanding of measures in place within the College to deal with issues of workplace violence and establish an awareness of reporting measures.

  • WHMIS Train the Trainer

Description: This course is intended to provide participants with a more in depth understanding of WHMIS and hazardous materials in the workplace. The course covers all of the material provided in the WHMIS refresher course, as well as principles of industrial hygiene, PPE and interpretation of material safety data sheets. 

Availability & Target  Group: Available as scheduled for any staff working with hazardous materials
