Rainforest & Tropical Science Course ENV0003:

Field Trip Component:  Students will actively participate in the Rainforest and Tropical Science course by completing a week-long field trip to Costa Rica to explore the country, its people, ecosystems and the rich biological resources found in a humid tropical climate.

Hands-on experiential learning will be supported by online learning activities as well as independent and group learning projects. Students will be immersed into a landscape rich in biological and geological diversity and will be exposed to the variables that are threatening its very existence. Students will learn to identify key characteristics of rainforest habitats and examine sustainable agriculture practices.

Students participating in this course will, at times, be required to hike long distances in difficult-to-navigate terrain. All participants are expected to reach the Algonquin Rainforest Campus via a whitewater rafting trip down the world famous Rio Pacuare.

Partners: Students will also study and learn at EARTH University. EARTH is an international centre contributing to the sustainable development of the humid tropics. It houses working learning labs such as a banana plantation, a self-sustaining farm operation, a paper production facility and trails that lead deep within the rain forest.

Costs: The approximate cost of this course will be $2,500. This amount represents the total of all expected costs including the course tuition fee, airfare, travel insurance, shuttles from Pembroke to the airport, all meals and accommodation. Algonquin College will provide access to a travel agent to arrange for passage (we must all travel together to Costa Rica), however, the plane fare itself will be paid directly to the travel agent.

Our Staff:  Experienced teachers from the tourism and outdoor adventure industries will accompany the students and participate in all the activities.  See more at Staff Profiles.
