Technical Writer
Computer lab window“The Technical Writer course at Algonquin gave me a broad base of the core skills and rhetorical foundation for writing about just about anything. The exposure to technologies through the course work and the students working through other programs has allowed me to have a toehold into pretty much everything I've been asked to do since. There was room to learn how to deal with others professionally and personally. All of this has made my 20 years in the industry both productive and enjoyable. I still love what I do.

What other industry would provide the opportunity to work on sales force management software one year and ultrasound equipment in another? Even the new technology I learn for doing my job, technologies such as DITA and structured writing, has a foundation in the core curriculum taught to me so long ago it's considered ancient history by some of my colleagues.”

Wanda Phillips, Class of 1989
Senior Technical Writer
Philips Ultrasound

“I graduated in 2007 and I’ve been employed ever since. The courses covered the basics of document design, exposed me to the tools of the trade, taught me how to write concise and clear technical content, and provided weekly presentations from experienced, knowledgeable people working in the technical writing field. My classmates were from all walks of life, with varied skill sets. Some were technical, some were not.  I certainly was not.

The skills and knowledge I acquired enabled me to hit the ground running when I accepted a placement at a large software company. The experience I gained during my placement led to a contract, which led to another contract, which led to a full-time position at a company that designs air traffic control systems. The Technical Writing program at Algonquin College provided me with the ability to embark on a rewarding and fulfilling career.”

Graham Coles, Class of 2007

"I came in with a very specific agenda of what I wanted to get out of the program. I wanted experience with the current tools and I wanted to extend my network of contacts in the technical writing world. However, I didn't want to spend two or three years getting back into the workforce. I will graduate from this one-year program confident in my technical skills and, because of the work placement process, I will also have practical experience in creating a resume, interviewing, and landing a rewarding job."

Pam, Class of 2008-9

"The Technical Writer program has taught me the skills and tools that I need to apply for jobs in many diverse areas of technology. The program combines theory and practice in small, focused classes where camaraderie and mutual support make it all seem easy. The professors provide high-quality instruction and direction that not only helps me succeed, but will also place me in a challenging and rewarding internship as part of my graduation."

Trish, Class of 2008-9
