Geomatics Technicians are members of the Military Engineering Branch of the Canadian Forces who capture, process, disseminate and manage geospatial information. Their primary role is to provide geomatics support to the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. Geomatics is the measurement, management, presentation and analysis of geospatial data, using cutting-edge technology.

Algonquin College in partnership with the Department of National Defense provide the Geomatics technician program training at our Woodroffe Campus.

This highly exciting and challenging occupation will teach selected applicant the skills necessary to apply the 5+1* tasks of military mapping which include:

  • Terrain Analysis and Visualization
  • Map Reproduction
  • Map Distribution
  • Surveying (Terrestrial, Geodetic and Aerial)
  • Geospatial Data Management; and
  • Geomatics Advice*

Geomatics Technicians are embedded in every major Headquarters across Canada. Some opportunities exist for international postings, including to the United States, Naples Italy, and the United Kingdom and for an exchange with the United States Army. All Geomatics Technicians can expect to deploy at any time for domestic or international operations.

Geomatics Technicians must be independent problem-solvers with stereovision acuity, a strong orientation to technology and above-average mathematics skills. They must be physically fit, confident and competent computer users, and capable of performing repetitive tasks while working to precise standards and tolerances. Finally, they must be comfortable working either alone or as a team members and be eligible for high security clearance.
