The Computer Studies Department of the School of Advanced
Technology at Algonquin College annually hosts a computer
programming contest. The contest is open to high school student
teams from the Ottawa region (including the Outaouais). There
can be multiple teams from the same high school, although
each team can only have a maximum of five students.
The contest has a different theme each year, but the overall
format and dates/timeframe of the contest remains the same,
consisting of:
- Announcement of the contest rules, theme and contest problem
(February-March)
- Registration of teams (April)
- Preliminary round (approx 4 weeks in April)
- Selection for final day event (end-April)
- Final day event (Saturday, mid-May)
The preliminary round is designed to allow teams to develop
their programming skills and their solution to the problem
as presented. The teams can work from their school or from
home, using available resources. When the teams are selected
for the final day-long contest, they come to Algonquin College’s
Advanced Technology Centre, and are presented with new challenges
based on the original problem which will require the teams
to re-work their original solution. All solutions are judged,
points are accumulated and the top teams are ranked to determine
the number 1, 2 & 3 spots.
On the final day event, all participants receive a contest
T-shirt, and are treated to a BBQ at lunchtime.
The goal is for groups to have fun, meet other students who
enjoy programming computers, show their abilities in a friendly
rivalry, and visit state-of-the-art computing facilities at
the School of Advanced Technology, Algonquin College.
Awards for the top three teams, valuable prizes and draws
bring the final day event to a close. They include trophies,
Olympic-like medals, custom windbreaker jackets, and many
popular computer consumer items.
