| Algonquin College and Hydro One Partnership |
Algonquin College is working with Hydro One as well as three other Ontario colleges to develop customized learning solutions for its looming skills shortage. Upwards of 30 percent of the Hydro One workforce will be eligible for retirement in a few short years, necessitating a large influx of job-ready college graduates trained in the electrical transmission and distribution utility sector.

| Bachelor
of Applied Technology - Photonics |
The Bachelor of Applied Technology (Photonics)
degree is one of the only bachelor's-level photonics programs
in North America and will address an urgent need in the
industry for highly skilled photonics employees in a wide
variety of industrial areas. Photonics - the generation
and transmission of light - is an enabling technology
in a vast array of industries and applications, with new
uses constantly emerging, all of which will require trained
professionals.
Algonquin College and Niagara College have worked closely
with Photonics Research Ontario since 1999 with the common
goal of advancing photonics technology in Ontario. In
2001, the partners launched the Photonics Education and
Training project, which included the creation of diploma
programs at Algonquin College at the technologist level.
The applied degree will complement these programs, and
will take advantage of the state-of-the-market facilities
- including optics, fibre-optics and laser laboratories
- that are already in place at both Niagara and Algonquin.
