Algonquin College See-Earth 2011 Program

The Algonquin College 2011 See-Earth program offers a challenging professional development experience combined with the popular general education elective
ENV0003 (Rain Forest and Tropical Science) to provide faculty and staff at Algonquin College a unique learning experience in the cloud and rain forest regions of CostamRica, Escuela de Agricultura de la Region Tropical Humeda (EARTH University) and surrounding communities.

Why See-Earth?

The 2011 See-Earth program supports faculty and staff professional development while embracing the goals and objectives of the Algonquin Experience. Participants in the
program will study and explore a tropical rainforest environment, work with faculty and students at Escuela de Agricultura de la Region Tropical Humeda (EARTH University) and spend time with families and community members of Santa Maria de Dota.

This experiential learning environment will contribute to your understanding of the pressures faced by students, teachers, farmers and communities living and working
within one of the most bio-diverse areas of the planet.

Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship in agricultural practices, and the efforts in place to preserve wildlife habitats and
pristine primary forest regions while developing a deeper appreciation for the importance of sustainable practices within Algonquin communities

Through collaborative work and study with faculty and students from Earth University participants will explore rich and bio-diverse habitats and learn how a small University with 400 students is making worldwide impact on tropical regions throughout the world.

Through hikes in primary and secondary forests, standing above the clouds
at 12,000 feet peering into the crater of an active volcano, whitewater rafting through the very heart of the rainforest and working alongside migrant coffee pickers, participants will find each day to be an experience like no other.

From the amazing blue morpho butterfly to snakes, spiders, monkeys, bats, birds and the elusive jungle jaguar, participants will be exposed to more flora and fauna in 10 days than exists in all of Canada. Bring your cameras, bring your sense of adventure, and test your limits.
