Program Commitments

All participants will be required to demonstrate their commitment by incorporating the outcomes of the learning experience into their role at the College and complete all three stages of the program.

The See-Earth program requires a commitment to actively participate in all three stages of the program:

Stage 1: Pre Departure
The pre-departure component consists of two parts.
1. All interested participants must attend one of the introductory information sessions on See-Earth in order to obtain essential requirements and information for the program.

Date: Monday, April 11th, 2011
Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Room C134

2. Online reading, articles and activities relating to the Rainforest and Tropical Science general education elective along with participation in the online See-earth 2011 program website.

Stage 2: During the trip
Participants will actively engage in all activities included in the See Earth Program - May 29th to June 10th 2011.

Some of the main highlights will include:
• Exploring the rim of the Poas volcano and seeing the direct effects of high concentrations of acid rain on the flora of surrounding areas.
• A visit to La Paz waterfall gardens, where you will see many of the indigenous fauna of Costa Rica (butterflies, pumas, jaguars, hummingbirds and toucans to name a few).
• The coffee plantations of the Algonquin Sombra Café project located in Santa Maria de Dota which includes a two night stay hosted by the Para family.
• Whitewater rafting down the Pacuare river into the rainforests followed by a four day stay at the Algonquin Rainforest campus hosted by Rios Tropicales.
• Projects and learning activities at Escuela de Agricultura de la Region Tropical Humeda (EARTH University). Participants will work directly with the students and faculty of
the university.

Participants will be expected to produce daily video blogs and small video instructional pieces related to the daily learning activities along with some assignments related to
the ENV0003 course.

You may visit the video page to see examples of materials produced on previous
expeditions.

Stage 3: Post-trip

1a. Faculty - make use of the Learning Activities developed during your participation of the program into the course/program of which you are involved.
1b. Staff - incorporate initiatives into your department based on your See-Earth experience.

What else do I need to know?

As a precaution, all participants will be encouraged to obtain vaccinations for Hepatitis A and Typhoid and will be asked to obtain anti Malaria medication for the travel dates. While this is entirely optional, it is highly recommended. Details on where and how to obtain these vaccinations will be provided at the first pre trip meeting.
