Counselling - Tragic Event Response Team
About TERT

What is it?
The Tragic Events Response Team (TERT) is a multi-disciplinary team of voluntary staff members from all parts of Algonquin College who have been trained to respond to critical incidents. When such events occur, this team is mobilized to provide support to students and staff members who have been affected by the tragic event, such as a sudden death or serious injury to a member of the Algonquin College community.

Why involve them?
Critical incidents are much different events than those we face in our normal day-to-day activities. When they do occur, they have the potential to provoke strong emotional reactions and can be stressful and difficult to deal with. The availability of TERT can help us to better understand and cope with our reactions.

How does it function?
TERT will provide support services in consultation with those people directly affected by the event. Types of interventions include:

  • on-site support to groups and individuals
  • classroom visits
  • information/clarification
  • education
  • consultation
  • referral
  • follow-up

TERT will remain available for follow up as needed after a critical incident.
