The CSD - Disability Support Services

Welcome to the Centre for Students with Disabilities, also known as the CSD. We are located in Room C142 of the Woodroffe Campus.

Our Mandate

The Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD) provides assistance to students with disabilities. Our staff works one-to-one with students to help them meet their individual needs. We assist students in making personal, academic, and vocational choices and in using campus facilities. We do not provide treatment, but when possible will provide referrals to services as requested.

Role of Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD)

The Centre for Students with Disabilities strives to provide the highest quality service to each student with a disability attending Algonquin College. It is the role of the CSD to ensure that every student with a disability has an equal opportunity to benefit from College programs. In providing services, the CSD emphasizes the personal independence and responsibility on the part of the student. Additionally, the CSD provides College personnel with information and guidance relating to physical accessibility issues within the College. This further ensures that students with physical disabilities can be fully integrated. The CSD also serves as a College and community resource for information about people with disabilities and the issues that affect them.

Services

Services to students with disabilities may vary, depending on the type and nature of the student's disability. Once accepted, new students wanting accommodations should contact the Centre for Students with Disabilities and submit appropriate documentation as early as possible. An appointment with a CSD counsellor will be set up. At the appointment, the counsellor will evaluate the documentation and determine what services and accommodations are appropriate.

Program applicants with a disability who are required to write an Admissions Test or Mature Student Test can receive accommodations for the test. Documentation is required, and the test is booked with the Centre.

In compliance with Algonquin College policy and federal and provincial legislation, students with disabilities may be found eligible for one or more of the following services from CSD:

  • Disability-related counselling and advising, including specialized academic and personal  counselling that is developed specifically for students with disabilities and not duplicated by regular  counselling and advising services available to all students
  • Interpreter services, including manual and oral interpreting, and intervener services
  • Readers and reading technologies, such as scan and read software , texts in MP3 or other accessible formats
  • Test accommodations, such as extra time, a quiet writing environment, and use of assistive technologies
  • Transcription services, such as Braille, large print materials, and accessible electronic text
  • Specialized instructional and tutoring services not otherwise provided by the institution
  • Note-takers and electronic note taking for course-related activities
  • Access to, and arrangements for, assistive devices

Do think that you may have a Learning Disability?

In certain circumstances, a Diagnostic Assessment can be done to determine if a student has a Learning Disability or other disability. Contact the Centre for Students with Disabilities to see if you are eligible for this service.

NOTE: Students must provide their own transportation and personal attendant care.

Emergency Evacuation Registry

In the event that the college needs to evacuate, Algonquin has put into place an Emergency Evacuation Registry to ensure that all students with mobility impairments are quickly located and safely evacuated by trained personnel.
