Complaint Procedure

Departments and Faculty Requirements

In accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Algonquin College Directive E4 , departments and faculty members are required to provide the reasonable academic accommodations specified by the Centre for Students with Disabilities in the Individual Student Plan. Equally, the Ontario Human Rights Code obliges CSD staff to uphold the rights of students with disabilities.

Academic Accommodations

If a student believes designated academic accommodations are not being appropriately provided, he/she should contact their CSD counsellor. CSD staff will assess the situation and provide the student with information about possible means for resolving the situation. CSD staff may be required to intervene on the student's behalf with the appropriate members of the college. Every effort will be made to reach a satisfactory resolution before recourse to the complaint procedure under Algonquin College 's Human Rights Policy is initiated.

Human Rights Complaint

A student pursuing a Human Rights complaint with the College should contact the Chair/Director, Ombudsperson or Counsellor. Complaints of this nature will be reviewed within the context of Algonquin's 1995 " Human Rights – Discrimination and Harassment" directive A8 . As a part of the Human Rights complaint process, the program/faculty will be asked to demonstrate: (a) that the designated academic accommodations would cause undue hardship; or (b) that the designated academic accommodations would fundamentally alter the requirements of the program being pursued by the student.

Educational Accommodation Process

To avoid conflicts and misunderstandings about the educational accommodation process, students and faculty alike are encouraged to seek information from Algonquin's Centre for Students with Disabilities whenever questions or concerns arise.
