Responsibilities of Students
1. Students will identify themselves to the CSD and, where required, provide appropriate documentation of their disabilities. In the case of learning disabilities, a psychoeducational assessment designating a specific learning disability is required. In the event that there is not a
psychoeducational assessment available, an IPRC or IEP with a clearly identified disability will be acceptable. In the absence of proper documentation, students will be directed to the appropriate professional.
2. Along with a CSD counsellor, and based on their documentation, students will assist in the development of an Individual Student Plan (ISP) which will meet their academic needs.
3. Where appropriate, students will inform individual professors of their disabilities and academic
accommodations required, by distributing the "Individual Student Plan (ISP)".
4. Students who are registered with the CSD and want to write a test or exam in the CSD Test Room
are responsible for picking up the testing or exam accommodation form, completing it with their
professor, and bringing the top copy to the CSD at least 7 days before the test date.
5. Students will endeavour to advocate for themselves when addressing disability-related needs.
Students may seek assistance from The Centre for Students with Disabilities at any time.
Students with disabilities, like all students, will abide by departmental, school, and College policies
and academic regulations (e.g., attend classes, submit assignments on time, and behave
appropriately).
Important Information to Remember From your First Meeting
Academic Advisor:
Your academic advisor is one of your professors or coordinators. The role of the academic advisor is to assist you with issues around your academic courses. You should consult with your advisor prior to making any changes in your timetable.
Overview of services provided by the CSD:
The role of the CSD is to provide you with the academic accommodations and support you require due to your disability. The accommodations you can receive are based on the confidential documentation you provide to the CSD.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The CSD follows a team approach, which involves you, the student, your professors, and your CSD counsellor. This team is further supported by the Learning Strategists and the Assistive Technologists. YOU are the captain of this team and are responsible for making your needs known to your counsellor.
Individual student plan :
Your Individual Student Plan (ISP) is the way in which you notify your professors of the accommodations you are entitled to. Accommodations will be listed on your ISP. You are responsible for providing your professors with a copy of the ISP and discussing your needs with them. If there are any concerns regarding the ISP, they should be brought to the attention of your counsellor at the beginning of the term. There is no obligation on the part of professors to accommodate a student with a disability if they have not been informed. You will require an updated ISP at the beginning of each semester.
Testing accommodations:
If you require accommodations for your tests and exams, and want to write the test in the CSD Test Room, it your responsibility to make the arrangements. You must submit the appropriate forms to the CSD at least 7 days before your test date; failure to provide the proper notice could result in you not being accommodated.
Final exam accommodations:
The CSD will provide ALL accommodations for students who wish to write in the CSD exam room. Again, you must submit the appropriate forms to the CSD at least 7 days before your exam date.
