Q: Who is in Residence?

A: At Algonquin Residence there is a Residence Life Coordinator, RAs, CAs, and Front Desk Staff. All of these positions are employed by Campus Living Centres to ensure that your student’s stay is safe, secure, satisfying and FUN.

Residence Life Coordinator
The Residence Life Coordinator is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are responsible for the everyday operations of the residence, directing the residence life program, ensuring the safety and security of students, and enforcing the rules and regulations when required.

Social Coordinator
The Social Coordinator is apart of the Residence Life Staff, living in the building amongst the staff and students. This position differs from one of an RA because the Social Coordinator is not responsible for handling discipline or participating in the on-call schedule. As the title of the position suggests, as Social Coordinator this person works closely with the Residence Life Coordinator to plan events for the residence building. Social Coordinator also sits on the Student Residence Council in an advisory role for social events.

Resident Advisors (RA)/Community Advisors (CA)
Resident Advisors are returning students who provide valuable support and guidance to the students living in Residence. They assist in community building, organizing the social activities, as well as acting as a liaison with the Residence Life Coordinator. These students are carefully selected after an interview process and are employed by Residence management.

To meet the RAs of 2008-09, visit the Resident Advisor (RA) tab to the left of the page.

Customer Service Representatives (CSR) – Front Desk Staff
The CSRs are available to help you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with signing in friends visiting at residence, signing out keys for the kitchen, movie lounge and pool table lounge. They are the people to get to know, since they are available to answer questions and provide you with access to a wide range of residence amenities.

Front Desk can be contacted by calling: 613-727-7698

Student Residence Council
The Students’ Residence Council is an elected group of students who provide timely and relevant student resident feedback directly to Algonquin College through the College Residence Management Committee. The Council gives a voice to residence students, representing their concerns, comments and suggestions on all aspects of Residence, including its operation, residence life, and services offered by both the management company and by the College.

For more information please follow the Student Residence Council link on the left-side toolbar on the website.

Q: Why can’t the staff reveal my son/daughter’s personal information to me? I am their parent!

A: As of August 1, 2007, Algonquin College has adapted the policies and procedures under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

Under these laws we are unable to release any information regarding your son or daughter, including but not limited to confirmation or denial of enrolment at Algonquin College, confirmation or denial of application to register for residence, options chosen on a residence application, residence assignment, and disciplinary actions. Please be aware that these laws apply to the records of all students, past and present, regardless of their age.

We ask that parents respect that all employees in Campus Living Centres and Algonquin College Student Support Services will be unable to provide student information under penalty of law. Please maintain an open line of communication between yourself and your student during the months leading up to move in, as well as during the academic year. The time prior to move in is a perfect opportunity to begin the transfer of responsibility to students, as parents are still present to assist and follow up with students, while students can practice being responsible for sending and receiving necessary information.

Q: It is my son/daughter’s first time living away from home – how can I let go?

A: It is never easy for a parent to say “goodbye” to their child, especially when leaving them in a new place where they will acquire a whole new level of independence from home. This article by Thomas E. Cronin called, “A primer for parents of college-bound students (PDF 67kb) is an excellent light-read on how to prepare yourself for “letting go” of your College student.
