| Test Centre - What the Tests are & What They Measure |
Because grade 12 is the minimum entrance requirement for admission to a college program, the tests the College uses are designed to reflect the level of difficulty and content present in a Canadian High School general grade 12 curriculum. If you have been out of school for a number of years, have come from a basic level high school stream or have completed all or part of your education in a non-Canadian setting, you would be well advised to undertake a solid review and/or upgrading of your basic skills before writing these tests.
These tests measure academic skills that are closely linked to success in the demanding environment of a college-level academic program. A low score on a test can be taken as a very reliable indicator that you would have trouble in a course or subject which required that skill as a starting point.
NOTE:
Dictionaries or other aids are not permitted on any of the English tests.
There are three tests in the English Test battery. The time needed to write all three test will vary between 1.3 hours and 2 hours. |
Whenever you are asked to write tests, you will almost always be asked to write tests that measure your English skills. The Test Centre uses English tests that are appropriate to the level of English required by the program in question. In some cases, these tests may reflect a level of difficulty found in a mainstream high school curriculum. In other cases they may reflect a level of difficulty found in an English or a Second Language curriculum. The level and nature of the English tests which you will write will be determined by the Registrar's Office after an examination of your file and of the requirements of your target program.
NOTE:
Calculators are not permitted on any of the math tests.
Time needed for each test : 35 minutes |
The nature of the "Program Standard Mathematics Test" is determined by the level of Mathematics required by your program. (High school prerequisite mathematics courses can include on or more of the following : MCT4C, MAP4C, MTB4G, MTT4G, MAT3A.) Depending on the program, you may be writing one or more of the following: Mathematics Computation, Mathematics Concepts and Applications, Elementary Algebra or Intermediate Algebra. Please refer to the program monographs for a more complete description of the level of Mathematics needed for each program.
NOTE:
Dictionaries or other aids are not permitted on any of the English tests. |
Many programs, because of the unique content of their curriculum, may ask you to write tests in specialized subject areas beyond English and/or Mathematics. Depending on your chosen program, you may be asked to write one or more of the tests.
Questionnaires
Many programs will ask you to complete questionnaires which ask about your previous work experience, future plans, reasons for choosing your program, etc. These questionnaires become part of your file and provide the selection committee with valuable information about you as a person.
