Can I meet with a counsellor? / Do I need an appointment?
While an appointment is not necessary to use the Career Resource Centre, it is usually necessary to make an appointment to see a counsellor. If you are an Algonquin student, you can see a counsellor to discuss any personal, career or academic concerns. If you are not a student at Algonquin, you can schedule a half-hour information appointment to discuss your career choice and academic options.
From September to the end of April we do have “walk-in” periods where you can see a counsellor on a first-come, first-served basis without an appointment. Call your nearest campus to confirm times.
Appointments can be scheduled in person or by phone.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?
Personal commitment to counselling is crucial for success. Individuals who must cancel their appointments should notify Counselling Services 24 hours prior to the appointment. This will enable us to contact another student who is waiting to see a counsellor.
Are issues discussed with a counsellor confidential?
All counselling sessions are subject to strict policies on confidentiality. Counselling Services is staffed by professional counsellors who support and maintain confidentiality and professional ethics.
No record of counselling is included in academic transcripts or in job placement files. A separate confidential file is established and maintained in Counselling Services. Information is only released when requested by you in writing, except in specific cases, such as:
- If you are at serious risk of causing harm to either yourself or another person.
- If there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a child under the age of 16 is at risk of being abused or neglected.
- Your counselling file has been subpoenaed by a court judge.
- If you tell us that you have been sexually abused by a regulated health professional and choose to provide the name of that individual.
Can I write an aptitude test?
If you are a registered student in the College, we can schedule an appointment with the next available counsellor.
I received a letter in the mail from the Registars Office stating:
a) that I was not accepted into the program of my choice, or
b) that I was put on a waiting list, or
c) that my application was cancelled.
If the letter states “did not meet Admission Criteria”, we can schedule an appointment for you to meet with the next available counsellor in order for you to discuss what your options are. If the letter states “did not meet the Departmental Assessment”, call our office to get the name and telephone number of the contact person responsible for the program to determine which criteria you did not meet. We can then schedule an appointment with a counsellor.
