What is the AC-HPAT™ ?

The new AC-HPAT™ is the ‘Algonquin College Health Program Admissions Test’. It is an admissions test that was developed by Algonquin College stakeholders, for Algonquin College (i.e., Algonquin students, faculty, and programs).

Can I use a calculator while writing the AC-HPAT™?

External or non-Accuplacer based calculators of any type are strictly forbidden while a candidate is writing the AC-HPAT™ (i.e., the use of external, online, and/or computer-based calculators is strictly forbidden, unless there are CAL (formerly ‘CSD’) testing Accommodations to the contrary).    Scrap paper and a pencil are provided for a candidate’s Arithmetic calculations, and an online Accuplacer-based calculator will appear for certain, designated math questions.  This built-in Accuplacer calculator is the ONLY calculator permitted to be used while a candidate writes the AC-HPAT, and again, only for those designated Arithmetic questions.

IMPORTANT:  It is up to the student to self-identify their need for assessment accommodations BEFORE they write, and re-writes of assessments are not permitted if the student fails to self-identify this need.

Please allow the Centre for Students with Disabilities 7 days to arrange your testing accommodations. Your supervisor is not permitted to grant testing accommodations that have not been approved, in advance, by the Centre for Students with Disabilities.

What is the format of the AC-HPAT™ and how long does it take?

The AC-HPAT is an online, computer-based assessment which consists of the following 3 sub-tests:

  • Accuplacer Reading Comprehension – Multiple Choice
  • Accuplacer Arithmetic – Multiple Choice
  • Gr. 11 & 12 High Schools Sciences* (60 questions, Multiple Choice):
    • Biology SBI3C (Gr. 11 C) – 25 Multiple Choice Questions
    • Chemistry SCH4C (Gr. 12 C) – 25 Multiple Choice Questions
    • Physics SPH4C  (Gr. 12 C) – 10 Multiple Choice Questions

Your assessment session will be ~ 3 hours .  In order to familiarize yourself with the AC-HPAT , you can access sample questions and read about the AC-HPAT by going to the Test Centre’s ‘Sample Questions

*For recommendations regarding science course content, please visit the Test Centre’s ‘Sample Questions’ web page –> AC-HPAT and utilize the Ontario Science Curriculum guide on that page.

What do I need to bring on the day of the AC-HPAT™ ?

You must bring a piece of valid government-issued photo ID when you come to write the AC-HPAT (e.g., Passport, Driver’s License, Permanent resident Card).  Without a valid government-issued photo ID, you cannot write the AC-HPAT .

Can I rewrite the AC-HPAT™ ?

No.  The AC-HPAT can only be written once per academic year. For example, if your OCAS number starts with “22”, you can only write the AC-HPAT once for programs beginning in 2022 (or Jan. 2023).

I have written the AC-HPAT™ before. Can I use my old results?

No.  The AC-HPAT is updated regularly, and so Algonquin College will not allow you to use results from previous years.

I have applied to multiple institutions in Ontario requiring me to write the HOAE or an alternative Health Programs Assessment. Do I need to write different assessment for each college I apply to?

Yes.  The AC-HPAT is unique to Algonquin College and is not recognized by other institutions for entrance into their health programs. You will be responsible for writing the admission assessment required by every College and College Program you have applied to.

How do I get my results?

Your results will be automatically forwarded to the Registrar’s Office  and added to your application for all Algonquin programs to which you have been invited to complete the AC-HPAT™. You will be officially notified by the Registrar’s Office about your admission status.

You should note that the purpose of an assessment is to determine if you are eligible for admission to your chosen program and that decision is made by the Registrar’s Office and your program.  In the case of highly competitive programs, there may be ranking involved to ensure the candidates most likely to succeed in the demanding program are selected.

If you have any further questions regarding the AC-HPAT™, please contact the Test Centre: testcentre@algonquincollege.com
