Calling all creatures By Eric Scharf scha0120@algonquincollege.com Dancing shoes were a must at The Observatory Sept. 29 as Creature and The New Cities took the stage. The New Cities opened the night with an explosion of synthesiser heavy electro-pop. The stage was full of energy during their entire set. No member of this six piece band ever takes a song off. Lead vocalist, David Brown, strongly focused to include the crowd in the show; leading claps and sing-alongs. The New Cities were a crowd pleaser. “They are not something you hear every day,” said Melanie Cox, a first-year general arts student. “It was amazing, I loved it.” By the time Creature hit the stage the small crowd had dwindled but the fun did not diminish. Those who left early missed out on a gem from Montreal. Creature, which has opened for the likes of GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan, brought cowbell driven dance rock to The Observatory. Their beats where infectious, forcing the remainder of fans to their feet. “People were so easy to get dancing,” said Cowbella, vocalist, synthesiser player and percussionist. “It is fun to be playing with the crowd and not for them." During the last song, Pay Up, Cowbella jumped into the group to dance among her fans’ passing the microphone around, much to the glee of those in attendance. “It was incredible, it rocked my socks off I had so much fun,” added second-year developmental services student Sara Robertson. Going to a Creature show allows you to “break a sweat, go free and have no one judge you as you bob your head to four ridiculously sexy people,” explained Cowbella with a laugh. Creature wants people to feel comfortable with who they are and “dance like no one is watching [them],” she said. “Geeks need to know they can be geeks,” said drummer Sid-Z. “They must break out and be proud of themselves.” The highly danceable quartet played songs off their new debut album No Sleep at All. They also dug deep into the past, covering an 80’s punk rock classic, The Clash’s “Magnificent Seven.” Creature has a week off and then they pack up and head to Paris. “People always tell us we would be huge in Europe,” said Cowbella. “Finally we will find out if Europe loves us.” |
