With posters and memorabilia in tow, eager Algonquin fans lined up Thursday Sept. 25 at the Observatory hoping to get a glimpse of famed actor, comedian Jason Mewes, known best as Jay from Jay and Silent Bob.

Fans from all over showed up to see Mewes in person as he greeted fans, signed autographs and took pictures.

“I love Jason Mewes,” said Emily Jenzi. “It’s pretty cool that he’s come here[that he’s] come to Ottawa of all places.”

The event, which was sponsored by the SA, was a big hit with fans, many of whom had been following the actor since his cinematic debut in 1994’s low budget movie Clerks.

Mewes, since appearing in Clerks has gone on to a successful movie career appearing in such movies as Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999) and various other acting projects.

“It’s a pretty big deal that he came to do the show because he only did three shows in Ontario and three shows in Canada so far,it was great turnout. The bar was packed all night and everyone got a change to talk to him and get an autograph,” said Ken MacLeod, SA events programmer.

Mewes is currently making the rounds visiting various schools.

“[Algonquin is], one of three schools in Ontario that got offered a show. He did a play in Hamilton, then [he went] to North Bay than he came here to do the show,” said MacLeod.

“I’m here to see the campus and do a little bit of signing and meet and greet, I’ve done a couple of schools ,... it’s nice to see different people and see how much they like to see the movies,” said Mewes.

For first year television broadcasting student Alexi Merkis, meeting  Mewes was an opportunity of a lifetime.

“[I’m] a big fan, [this is] huge, it means a lot...He’s not the biggest [star] in Hollywood, but to us he’s huge,” said Merkis.
