Musicians share the limelight By Cierra Campeau camp0469@algonquincollege.com Guest musicians performed an acoustic showcase for a small but captivated crowd in the courtyard Sept. 8 at Algonquin. Peter Katz, Trevor James, Robyn Dell’Unto and Craig Cardiff all sat in a chair on stage with guitars in hand. The intelligent songwriters each gave the others their chance in the limelight. One would stand up to sing a number, while the others would sporadically show support by strumming along or “noodling” as Dell’Unto called it. “Don’t be shy, we’re a big family at Algonquin,” said Cardiff, inviting the audience to sit closer to the stage. There was no hesitation as students pulled up four picnic tables right away, aligning them in a semi circle. “That was the most memorable moment of the show,” said member of Student Services, Rodolfo L. Botelho who helped with setup earlier that day and ran the merchandise table. “There were some people in the audience that stayed for the whole performance. It's hard to bring in a crowd at that time of day during classes,” said Botelho. Ken MacLeod, events programmer of the Student Association, heard of most of the performers through Canadian Organization of Campus Activities where he witnessed Dell’Unto playing at the showcase. “She’s not signed. She’s independent and recording her album right now,” said MacLeod. The EP she was selling just got back from the printer that morning. Luc Paquette, second-year student in small and medium enterprise management, had no other commitments on his agenda that day. He was one of the students able to watch the whole performance. “I’m drawn to this type of music, and I really like to support Canadian artists,” said Paquette, genuinely impressed. “I just put the four of them together and thought it would be a good show,” said MacLeod. It turned out for the best, said Botelho. “I would definitely consider this show to run again next year.”
