College sees stars with Gordon Esnard

By Jake Beers - Algonquin Times staff

Algonquin’s own Gordon Esnard has recently been nominated for the Stars of the City award for this year.

Esnard, the Food and Beverage Operations assistant manager, has been with the college for 31 years.

“I’m proud of Algonquin, of what I do, and the people I work with,” Esnard said.

The Stars of the City award has been around since the mid-90s. There are different categories of awards that change each year to match the nominations.

“The program is to recognize front line staff because they’re the face of tourism,” said Jamie Harland staff lesion for the Stars of the City program.

Esnard was nominated by Beth Cameron who was at a gala held at the college last year and saw him help a woman who tripped while getting back to her seat.

“I was just doing my job,” said Esnard.

The woman was sent to the hospital and he later went to the table where the woman had been sitting and talked to the people sitting there. They told him she was at the hospital and fine, but was very hungry. He then packed up a dinner and sent it to the hospital.

“I was doing a good gesture type thing. The way I am I made sure it got to the hospital,” said Esnard.

Esnard received his nomination on Dec. 22 and said he was surprised when he saw it.

“I do what I normally do. I enjoy working with people,” he said.

The recognition evening, which will take place in October of this year, will be catered by Algonquin, putting Esnard in two places at once.

“I’ll be there on the floor and working,” he said.

The Stars of the City program had a record breaking 560 nominations last year and is already getting many nominations early in the year.

“I bet that this year will be record breaking too,” said. The year ends on Sept. 1.
