A group of event management students have extended their deadline on a logo design contest due to the lack of interest from graphic design students.

Lining the hallways throughout the school are posters with big sad faces, looking for help from graphic design students but so far, no one has made a submission.

The group of eight students is putting together a battle of the bands to raise funds for the project, Big Picture Small World which is a charity to help build a school in Rongai, Tanzania.

The logo design selected will be used to brand the event and will appear on posters and tickets.

“If they can work their name in the design it will be all over the city and they could use it in their portfolio,” said Betsy Moore, a 21-year-old event management student.

The battle of the bands will take place in late March or early April and will be hosted by Pier 21 in the ByWard Market.

“The bar has experience holding battle of the bands contests and has agreed to donate the $5 cover charge to the charity,” said Clara Auyeung, 25, who added that they might have a raffle during the event to raise additional money.

The group is looking for something simple that will tie in the musical and global elements.

“We were thinking of something like a guitar with a map of Africa in the string section,” said Moore.

The event management students were given a $100 for start-up, which they have to pay back, and were told to organize their event with no budget.

“Our goal is to raise $8,000 to repay the college for building the school in Africa,” said Celine Perrier, an instructor in the event management program.

Three weeks into the one year post-graduate program, the students had to sign up for the event they wanted to help put together. Some of the other events are a fashion show and a chef auction.

The battle of the bands will work off of a sign up list from a similar event two years ago to solicit bands for the contest. But the group will be accepting applications for musicians who want to participate in the battle of the bands in the next two weeks.

“We’re looking primarily at rock or pop but we’ll take reggae or ska, it’s a great opportunity for the bands to get out there,” said Jhannell Edwards, 20.

At least one of the band members must be enrolled in post secondary education in the city of Ottawa.

“We really wanted to involve students in the project, that’s why we had the contest for the graphic design program,” said Allison Kearney, 25.
