Apple commercial bites into PC
cunh0005@algonquincollege.com “Hi, I’m a Mac.” “And I’m a PC.” If what Christopher Kahle says is true, the commercials are working. Thanks to Get a Mac, Apple has become a popular alternative to PCs. “People are going to Mac because of Windows Vista,” said Kahle, a second-year in computer programming and the Apple representative on campus. “We’re just trying to make a presence here.” He said Apple still has competition on campus, but people are becoming disillusioned with PCs inability to control Vista’s problems. Apple was one of many companies displaying their wares in the courtyard on Sept. 12. The New Technology Store held its ninth annual technology fair to showcase the latest and greatest products on the market. One of the biggest draws was the Wii system set up in the corner. Attendees could go and try their hand at baseball or tennis. “The games are fun,” said third-year Ron Martineau, an electrical engineering technologist student. He said he goes to the fair to “check out all the new cool stuff and technology.” “You won’t see any desktops here,” said Jeff Broughton, the fair director. Technology has changed drastically in the last two years, he explained. Desktops used to be the main items companies pushed, but now laptops have surpassed the old beasts. “There’s no big hunking technology,” said Broughton. Everything on display was sleek, slim and stylish. “We want to let students and staff know what’s available in store and help them learn better at the college,” said Broughton. Even though it was pouring rain, a couple hundred people showed up to check out the displays. However, the purpose is to educate, not to make money, said Broughton. The store is a not-for-profit organization. “The money goes back to lowering tuition fees and for college improvements,” he added. Broughton’s favourite innovation on display was a Toshiba television made especially for gaming. “It has faster response times, it’s crisper, cleaner.”
