Students Association vice president resigns By Andrew Warren warr0120@algonquincollege.com March 12, 2009
With only two months remaining in her term, the vice-president of the Students’ Association has resigned her position on the board of directors. Director Eric McQuiggan has been elected by a vote of board members to fill the VP position left open by Laura Spragge’s resignation. Spragge had been VP since the current board was sworn in on May 1, 2008. “Eric is very, very dedicated. He’s really going to do the students justice,” Spragge said of her successor. Her resignation was officially announced to the board of directors on Feb. 25. SA policy requires that the board have two signing officers, and the board moved swiftly to fill the vacant position. Directors were asked for nominations from among themselves and McQuiggan was elected as the new vice-president on Feb. 27 by a silent vote of the directors. “I look forward to serving ... as the new VP and it’ll be a great last two months of the year,” McQuiggan said. SA President Rob Nettleton reassured students that it’s business as usual for the SA and that the shake-up won’t affect the organization’s day to day business. “We are still functioning very strongly and we’re still working to keep the focus on students,” Nettleton said. “I don’t think it’s going to affect us because we’re six very strong people.” Spragge, a public relations student, has been suffering from a chronic pain condition for some time that makes it difficult for her to sleep and saps her energy. Now in her final semester, she made the decision to resign from the board of directors to focus on her academics. “It’s a very fine line between doing what you love and allocating time for the board and the students,” Spragge said. “It’s been really hard to allocate the time needed to succeed in my program. ” “I really want to applaud Lara because it wasn’t an easy decision to make, but she made it for all the right reasons,” said Nettleton. “Everyone wishes her well.” McQuiggan’s term as vice-president will be a short one. The new board of directors for the 2009-2010 school year was presented to the student body at the SA’s annual general meeting on Mar. 5, to be sworn in May 1. In his time on the SA board McQuiggan has taken an active role in championing information technology issues on campus. He took a leadership position during the recent ITS fee discussions, using his expertise and experience in the technology field to help the rest of the directors make an educated decision on the fee increase.
