Carleton or Algonquin? That question weighed heavily on Laura Walsh’s mind on March 26 when she attended the Discovery Evening open house at Algonquin. After speaking with teachers in the business program, and touring the school, Walsh had made up her mind. “I’m pretty sure I’m coming here in September,” she said. “Being able to talk to teachers, figuring out exactly what the program entailed has been helpful.” Walsh and several other prospective students attended the evening to gain a better understanding of what the college had to offer. Programs opened their doors so that people could ask teachers specific questions about what the course offers. “It’s been a few years that programs have been doing sessions,” said Anne Kalil, recruitment manager for the school. “Anyone that has a lab opens it up for tours.” Nathan Barkhouse, along with fellow students Chris Saunders and Matt Hamilton, had fun showing visitors some of the practical knowledge that students would gain from the Paramedic course. They simulated a situation that would require paramedics to secure a victim, in a confined space, to a back board for aid. This was something students would learn to do during the program. The event has been held for at least two decades. “The turnout went really well,” said Kalil. “The weather is always a factor but it went really well. |
