In New York City, 20 of Algonquin’s graphic design students studied, learned and watched how professional graphic designers do their job in the heart of the media capital of the world.

“It was an amazing experience,” says a professor in the graphic design, James Acres, who went on the trip.  “Anything and everything is happening in New York.  It is the media centre of the world.”

Students from the college were able to visit four different design studios which have been successful worldwide.  Each of the studios visited presented the students with a different perspective on graphic design.

The field trip offered the students the opportunity to see different areas of graphic design in the real working world.

“The purpose of the visit was to show students that graphic design is more than just logos or layouts, or websites,” said Acres.  “It was good to see how graphic design works behind the scenes from concept to planning to user-testing and production.”

Acres was very pleased to see that students got the chance to see how things are done and them getting a new awareness of what they are studying.

“The studios were really honest,” said Acres in reference to design jobs and the economy.  “Although many of the main mediums are suffering like radio, television are suffering, others are still going up, the interactive industry especially.  The interactive industry includes websites, mobile applications and interactive kiosks.”
