Algonquin’s new sports
field will be finished in time to host the men’s and women’s soccer
provincials Oct. 28-29.
Although construction of the field is not yet complete, it has been
rented by outside leagues such as Ottawa Touch Football and the
Ottawa Fury for nearly all of the hours it will be available, said
Ron Port, the college’s athletic director.
“We’re almost full to capacity for summer and winter,” said Port. “We have
very few hours left.” Port emphasised that the field has only been
rented out at times when students are not using it and that students
are the priority.
The field will be functional throughout all seasons thanks to an
air-supported dome that covers the field from November until April.
The field is actually two fields – one large field divided in two by
netting.
The cost of renting half the field is $150 per hour, meaning the
field is rented for $300 per hour if two teams book it. The sports
field is an SA-funded project and all of the profits made from the
rentals will be given back to it.
The field was originally slated to open in September, but
construction problems means the field will open late and a little
over budget.
