Another one bites the dust.

The popular Queen song was heard throughout the gymnasium as another battered and bruised opponent left Algonquin empty-handed.

It was a good weekend for the women’s basketball team as they won the second of two successful back-to-back home games 62-55 over Durham College on Nov. 22.

The Thunder held the lead for most of the play, despite a desperate effort by the Lords in the dying minutes to get back into the game. Durham put on lots of pressure, climbing back from a 19-point deficit, but in the end it just wasn’t enough.

Thunder player Kristen Hibbert had a solid outing, putting up 27 points in the victory.

Aside from some minor meltdowns and turnovers, Thunder head coach John MacInnis was impressed with his team’s effort.

“I thought we held up really well,” said MacInnis. “The fatigue factor showed a bit though.” This was in relation to the game the night before when the women defeated Fleming College 58-24, leaving them not much time to rest up.

“I’m pretty happy with how things went today. We had more ups than downs which is good,” said MacInnis.

Algonquin had a strong defensive presence, boxing out and making sure to bring loads of pressure to the point guards.

However, according to MacInnis, there is always room for improvement.

“We still need to work on things. There are always things to work on,” said MacInnis. “Competing at this level consistently is the key factor.”

The Thunder has one more game to play this year, which happens to be at home, before taking nearly a month off.

After Christmas, Algonquin will look to start off 2009 with a bang, when they compete in a tournament in Mt. St. Vincent, Halifax, starting Jan. 2.
