Coyotes have no bite

It was just another day in the park for the Algonquin women’s volleyball team as they handily defeated La Cite Collegiale 3-0 on Nov 5.

The Thunder, who have tradionally had strong teams over the years, did not disappoint their fans, winning each of the three games with ease, in a little over an hour, and moving up in the OCAA standings early in the season with a 5-1 record.

Offensively, the team was led by last year’s second team all-star for the East/Central East region, Ashlie Cormack, who displayed her strong play at the net with 11 kills. However, the Coyotes’ Annie Cadieux led all players in the game with 17 total offensive points, including three service aces.

Nonetheless, the Thunder team as a whole defended very well against the Coyotes, including the 11 digs compliments of Erin Moore. The blocking presence was seen on the score sheet as well as on the court with Algonquin posting 10 stuff blocks to La Cite’s two.

Despite La Cite going into the match with a poor 1-4 record, Algonquin assistant coach, Brock Kalef was not fazed by the numbers and noted that this was what made it a hard game to focus.

“We came out and gave a good effort on our side,” said Kalef, who was filling in for head coach Everton Senior. “The fact that we didn’t take them lightly and came out and won was satisfying.”

He also noted that it was important to have everyone on the team playing at least one game, which obviously included the spares.

“It was nice to get out there and play our game, without worrying about what was going on with the other side,” said Kalef.

This was the start of what will be a three game home stand for the team, with two tough opponents, Georgian College and Seneca College, rolling into town.
