The Algonquin men’s basketball team finished the thanksgiving weekend with a heartbreaking 87-86 loss to Sainte-Foy Dynamiques in an exhibition game on Oct 13.

This nail biter went down to the wire and was a back and forth affair all game before Sainte-Foy turned the ball up court with mere seconds left on the clock to nail a buzzer beater for the win.

The last minute of the game felt like an eternity as each team making use of their timeouts.

“That was one crazy finish,” said Dynamiques head coach Jacques Paiement.  “It was a lot of fun.  Both teams fought pretty hard.  It wasn’t as much of a defensive game as I would have liked.”

This was the third exhibition meeting between the two teams, who match up very well together, within a span of two weeks.  The teams battled in two previous games that took place in a tournament Gatineau. Sainte-Foy won the first game, however Algonquin exacted revenge beating them in the final.  Coming into this last exhibition game, both teams were familiar with each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

Sainte-Foy is looking for a better season after finishing a disappointing seventh in their respective conference.

As for the Thunder, the loss was definitely disappointing, even if it was not regular season action.
”We are obviously upset,” said Algonquin assistant coach Jim Langis.  “It was a close game but we made some costly mistakes.”

Langis also stressed the fact that the team needs to improve on being more consistent.

“At times we look great and other times not so much,” he said. “We are getting there though. We are making significant strides.”

The Thunder now look to put the loss behind them as they try to start the season off 2-0, not before they take their game on the road to Dawson College for a three day tournament starting Oct. 17.
