The Algonquin men’s basketball team opened their regular season in style, with a commanding 106-62 win over the George Brown College Huskies on Oct.10.

To say that the Thunder dominated would be an understatement.  Algonquin took the lead early and never looked back.

Thunder Charly Spurr managed to rack up an impressive 32 points and in the process netted five three-pointers, which according to him, is a big part f his game.

“It was nice to get the first game jitters out of the way,” said Spurr. “I’m surrounded by a lot of good players that are able to get me the ball.”

The loud vocals and high-tempo attitude coming from the Huskies bench in the first half, turned into dead silence in the second half.

The George Brown coaches sat the whole second half and very little, if anything at all. Their eyes glazed over in disappointment.  It would only make sense that they were not available for content, as they quickly darted from the gym after the buzzer.

Algonquin passed the ball effectively and controlled the time of possession.

What didn’t show up on the score sheet was also the number of key blocked shots during the game which really showed one of the team’s defensive strengths.

“I think we played very well,” said Thunder head coach Trevor Costello. “I put a lot of pressure on them this game.  We went 5-1 in preseason play up to this point, but all that means nothing in the regular season.”

Algonquin has gone through a total overhaul of players.  There is only two returning players from last year’s roster.

Even though it is too early to tell how this team will do this year, Costello is optimistic. “I like our team. We lack size, but I think we have better guards.”

Only time will indicate how successful this season will be, but it has definitely started with a bang.

The Thunder now get set to take on Sainte-Foy on Oct.13
